The railways are essential in tackling climate change and are the frontrunner in the transport sector in terms of meeting the ambitious goals of the European Green Deal. The global rail community will continue to develop its work and maintain its position to further reduce its environmental footprint. As one of the greenest transport modes, the railways shall be promoted to achieve climate goals at global level.

Noise is a critical environmental aspect of the railways, and noise-related issues must be addressed if rail traffic is to be promoted. As a result of efforts to eliminate such problems on the railways, there is growing concern about ground-borne vibrations and their effect on people living near railway networks. The European railways will continue to lead international efforts on noise and vibration issues, focusing on:

solving environmental problems,
examining their impact on human health and
promoting the implementation of ambitious environmental, climate and energy policies worldwide.

As rail expands its capacity to meet the need to shift transport away from unsustainable modes of transport, it must provide space for wildlife to thrive.

The International Union of Railways (UIC) is seeking solutions and best practice to manage rail lineside in a way that can help halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity. This website provides information about our new project, Ecological Effects of Railways on Wildlife (rEvERsE) (2020-2023).

In 2018, the UIC Sustainable Mobility Expert Network launched the "Sustainable passenger railways and door-to-door solutions" global project with the aim of developing guidelines based on cooperation between UIC members, stakeholders in the railway sector and experts in sustainable mobility. The goal is to define the characteristics of door-to-door mobility with particular attention to integrating new vehicle-sharing and ridesharing services and new digital technologies in the railway transport sector more generally in order to provide a more customer-oriented service.

The final output of the project will be a document: “UIC Door-to-Door Solutions - Guidelines for the Railway” targeted toward railway operators and infrastructure managers/station managers. This project is being conducted with the support of the Foundation for Sustainable Development in Rome, Italy.
